Home > VR Gaming on the Meta Quest 3

Having been quite impressed with the Quest 2, and hearing the Quest 3 would have some nice refinements over the Quest 2, I decided to pick-up the Quest 3 in mid-November of 2023. The 128GB version seemed to be the one for me because much of the gaming I was doing on the Quest 2 was PCVR-based, so not requiring lots of local storage, plus dabbling in some WebXR game developement. I figured that would also be the case with the Quest 3. Alas, with the Quest 3's additional hardware capabilities, playing more games natively on the headset could make the higher storage version more handy for others. I suppose there are trade-offs between graphics, processing, and game complexity of PCVR titles vs. ever so slightly lower input lag playing titles natively on the headset, plus portability of native titles, as my gaming PC is a desktop and stays put. I also picked-up the official Meta Quest 3 Elite Strap with Battery. Getting that official accessory seemed to be the best option at that point. Though I know it was partially recalled and I still need to see if mine was recalled.

First impressions of the Quest 3 were positive. The higher resolution display, glass optics instead of plastic fresnel lens, higher resolution, outward-facing, color cameras, and improved pass-through, along with faster and more capable CPU, GPU, and more memory, are all quite nice. While the halos of the Quest 2 controllers can get in the way, I do kind of like how the Quest 2 controllers can be set-down well by placing them halo-down on a flat surface, whereas the Quest 3 controllers don't stow all that well unless you have a stand. Still, making the controllers less bulky is probably a net plus. It's impressive how if I'm at my computer or looking at my phone I don't need to take the headset off to read text. It's still not amazing pass-through quality, but certainly much improved over the Quest 2's lower resolution, grayscale cameras. One can even record stereoscopic video on the outward cameras, which is pretty neat! Here's a video of my first impressions of the Quest 3. Here's another video trying out 120Hz on the Quest 3. Note that video was frame-decimated to 60fps, though it gives you a feel for the headset's capabilities when running a game at 120Hz.

At the time I purchased the Quest 3 and started looking for top-notch accessories for it, there sure didn't seem to be many options available. With the Quest 2, which I bought about a year and a half into its release, the accessory landscape was certainly more mature. I liked the KIWI design accessories for the Quest 2, but they didn't seem to have any available for the Quest 3 at the time. In addition to the official Meta Quest 3 Elite Strap with Battery, I ended-up getting the following additional accessories for my Quest 3...

Here's a video showing installation of those accessories.
